2023 Details of External Competitions |
All playing members are strongly encouraged to take part in the clubs external competitions, when available. Whilst practice sessions and roll-up are essential in finding your feet and gaining a decent feeling for the game, the best way to learn about the game of bowls is playing in matches against fellow members and other clubs.
This year we have entered 4 competitions so there will be lots of opportunities for all.
We are going to try the concept of a squad system for the various competitions this year in order to best manage arranging teams. The four main competitions are the Prentice Cup, The Cornish Cup, The Prescott Cup and the Bertie Joel Trophy. The format varies between competitions and are detailed below.
In order to avoid clogging-up e-mail inboxes with requests for players we have decided to ask members to consider which competition they are most likely to be available for and interested in playing. Having done this, requests will be managed by WhatsApp.
The Selection Committee will meet on a weekly basis and pick the teams for all competitions a week in advance. The competitions are:
The Prentice Cup – Tuesday evenings in June, 6.00 start, 2 rinks
The Prentice cup requires 2 teams of 4 (8 players in total), one team of four will play the opposition at home, and the other team of four playing the same opposition away. Each bowler plays 2 bowls per end, and the game lasts for 18 ends. Dress code is grey trousers / shorts / skirts and a white top. The away side will need to meet at the club around 5.00 in order to travel to the away game and the home side at 5.45 at the Club. Games generally don’t finish until 8.30 with supper provided (Ploughmans). Last year, we were quarter finalists, so we will look to be playing stronger players as Skip and 3, but all members are encouraged to put their names forward. Mike Gostick will be managing the squad.
Cornish Cup – Thursday evenings (May to August), 6.00 start, 2 triples
The Cornish cup requires 2 teams of 3 (6 in total), playing 6 other North London clubs home and away over the course of the season as in the Premier League, so MHBC will play each club at their green and again at home over the course of the season. Each bowler plays 3 bowls, and the game lasts for 18 ends. Dress code is grey trousers / shorts / skirts and a white top. Normally we would meet at the club between 5-5:30 for a 6:00 start, with games typically finished by 8:30. Last year, we were second, so this will be the main target for the club this year, with the strongest available squad being selected for each match, but all our encouraged to make themselves available as form changes throughout the season.Toby Johnson will be managing the squad.
Prescott Cup – Saturday, 2.00 for 2.30 start, 3 triples
Based on our buoyant membership last year we decided to enter this competition for the first time this year. Dress code for both is white trousers / shorts / skirts and a white top. The format is the same as the Cornish Cup so we will play each Club twice over the course of the season, once at their place and later on in the season at home (or vice versa). This will provide an ideal opportunity to develop newer members in a competitive but friendly environment.
Johnny Ellis and Andy Nairn will be managing the squads.
Bertie Joel Trophy – Saturday, 2.00 for 2.30 start, 3 triples
This competition involves 5 North London Clubs whom we play once over the season (mixture of home and away fixtures). This is also an ideal opportunity to introduce new players to competitive bowls in a friendly and supportive environment. Last year we used this competition to give our bright young stars the opportunity to skip, and in so doing develop their understanding of the game. Johnny Ellis and Andy Nairn will be managing the squads.
